This is very clearly set in the Vietnam War, judging by the foliage and military uniforms. Now, we all know that Donkey Kong is actually Cranky Kong in the original game. Similarly, I propose that this game is about Mario’s father (Mario is his last name after all). This would also explain why Mario dies at the end of Donkey Kong Jr. It’s because that too was Mario Senior (or Jumpman), and his son has been the star in each subsequent game. I have been playing Mario games for far too long and I think my brain might be melting.
