5/5 ★ – MechaniChris's review of Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered.
While I have a couple notes, I think this is probably one of the best games I’ve ever played. Which is fitting because one of my previous favorites is the old Spider-man 2 game for PS2. This game is essentially the same, but improved in literally every conceivable way.
There really is nothing quite like swinging through New York City. It just FEELS so good. I almost never used fast travel because I had so much fun just traversing. The game is absolutely gorgeous too, there are moments when it looks just as believable as the movies, and allowing me to have the movie costumes right at the start? Perfection.
I did say I had some notes, but they’re very minor. For starters, those research missions suck. I know they’re optional, but having to swing through smog and whatnot was more tedious than fun. Next, I kinda wish more villains would pop up? Not big guys who play into the story, but like minor costumes villains as part of the texture of the city. ALL of the crime interactions are with thugs and soldiers, and I’d have loved to see some D-list villains pop in for a couple missions. Lastly, and I believe this is a common complaint, the villains are far too techy. This is mostly about Hammerhead, but it applies to most of them. All this weird robotics and future weaponry just feels a bit out of tone with the Spider-man I love.
None of that however is enough to lower my score from 5 stars. I really think this is the definitive Spider-man gaming experience, and while I believe the second game might be better, it’ll have all the baggage than any sequel must. This is Spider-man at its purest. I played this non-stop for two weeks and rolled right in to Miles Morales because I couldn’t get enough.
