4.5/5 ★ – MechaniChris's review of Resident Evil 4.
This was the second game I played in the franchise when I was a kid. Me and my brother would take turns for segments and by the time we unlocked everything in the game, we had memorized all the cutscenes and would quote them to another. To this day, I still think of the Chicago Typewriter as the greatest gun ever in a video game.
So yeah, I’ve got some nostalgia for this one. I was even a bit confused when they announced a remake for next year. “What is there to improve?” I thought, thinking maybe it would just get a graphics overhaul. Now replaying it for the first time in years, I know exactly what they’re going to improve.
I’m not saying that game isn’t a masterpiece, it very much is. I’m just saying that when a game is SO far ahead of it’s time in terms of innovation for the genre, then by the time every other game catches up, the innovator is going to feel dated. That’s the case here. I still had almost as much fun as I did as a kid, but having played so many modern over-the-shoulder shooters since this, I have to admit that the controls kinda suck. You can’t even run and turn at the same time, much less move while you aim.
Everything else is at the peak of the genre, but just a few quality of life improvements would make this perfect. Here’s hoping that the R4make does it justice and delivers a truly perfect game. And they better not cut the infinite Rocket Launcher or the Chicago Typewriter. Those are pillars of gaming.
