3/5 ★ – MechaniChris's review of Resident Evil: Dead Aim.
An enormous improvement on the previous Gun Survivor games. For one thing, this is actually a full game! Well, it’s still pretty short, but I don’t mind that! It’s nice to run through an entire game in one afternoon.
There are some issues still holding it back however. The controls are kind of abysmal. It has gone back to the first Survivor method of moving the target reticule rather than the entire camera. Not to mention that controlling the aiming is completely different than the regular camera controls, so it often gets confusing, especially starting out. Because of the way turning works, movement can be painfully slow as well. Still, is really is MUCH better than I expected, and it feels like even one more entry in this franchise would have nailed it, though it could be argued that the Revelations games eventually just became what that would have been.
As for the story, it’s pretty weak. I really like the cruise ship setting for the first portion of the game, but it quickly becomes sewers and labs like we’ve seen before, and it’s all strung together by a very cliche action hero and uninteresting villain. But that said, it is once again by far the best story in this trilogy, so I hesitate to be too harsh.
Overall, enjoyed playing it! Hard to overstay your welcome when you’re done in just a few hours. If someone is interested in playing this series, I’d actually recommend playing this one, but you can skip the first two Survivors. They are not remotely related.
