It’s more Sonic 3! With Knuckles! I’m sure that the combo game felt miraculous compared to what came before, but as its own entry, I do think I like this half less than the core game. I like the worlds better in Sonic 3 and while it’s great to play as Knuckles, giving him such a reduced story mode compared to Sonic felt odd. They basically have the same levels until the lava world and then Knuckles just fights his big boss and it’s over. Sonic still has like 3 more worlds after that! Also, no spinball level! Let my boy into a pinball machine! In any case, this is still firmly in the good category of Sonic games and I fear I am rapidly approaching a severe drop off soon.
