3.5/5 ★ – MechaniChris's review of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures.
I’m sure this is considered one of the more slight entries in the franchise, but I really enjoyed it! It feels like a more modern Zelda adventure in terms of puzzles and action, but still has the 2D charm of the old school games. Mostly I enjoyed that it was challenging without being obtuse. Certain puzzles could take you a while to figure out, but nothing would take you DAYS like in the gameboy games.
I also really enjoyed the 4 sword gimmick. It’s fun to line up all 4 guys and unleash hell on a room of enemies, and having to swap styles never feels tedious as having to swap items often does. In fact, I enjoy how fast-paced the whole game was. Doing away with the item system seemed suspect to me at first but I actually think it paid off. That said, I didn’t love restarting the hearts every new level. That got annoying.
Only other complaint I have is that it’s probably the weakest graphically that I’ve played so far. The GameCube 2D graphics feel more like a Newgrounds game than an official Nintendo product. That’s hardly enough to ruin the experience however and I highly recommend this to any fan who hasn’t checked it out yet.
