3.5/5 ★ – MechaniChris's review of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
I was a bit weary of a Windwaker sequel performing on the DS, especially in light of its entire controls being stylus reliant, but found it to be shockingly competent. It bridges the feel of the sprawling console games with the top down handheld games. The boat travel is robust and challenging and combat is surprisingly nuanced for being so gesture based.
I’d complement most of the dungeons but the one fatal flaw I’d give this game is the repetition of the same dungeon multiple times. I understand that you can approach it differently each time due to your growing items, but it still feels tedious to tread the same challenges for the 4th time.
It’s not a perfect Zelda adventure but it’s a fun followup to one of the greatest games of all time and it’s a close enough experience that it ranks pretty highly itself. Now they just need to remake Windwaker for the Switch 2 so I can replay the REAL game.
