3.5/5 ★ – MediumRareGuy's review of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
It builds upon much of what made it's predecessor engaging; the combat and level design are immaculate. The added variety of stances and expanded skill tree make for a more expressive player experience, building and equipping Cal to suit their play style.
The plot was alright, it keeps a steady pace and is thematically consistent. The KOTOR games have spoiled me with their character writing however, thus knowing that potential of the star wars franchise always dampens the effect installments like this can have; because by all rights this game's characters and story aren't bad, but they could be so much more than this.
Pyloon's saloon is cute. The cast of side characters you can encounter are also cute, not many of them are presented in a very interesting way though. Skoova Stev was probably the most fun and wish more characters from the saloon were built around a collection mechanic or something like him. Encountering him inbetween battles made his back story worth listening to, a little break. You will never learn much about any of the other side characters without WILLING yourself to listen to sit through their dialogue. That being said, I enjoyed Moran and Mosey's stories despite it.
I don't generally enjoy open worlds, and I didnt really enjoy it here either. ESPECIALLY the optional bosses. Reskinned, powered up versions of the larger creatures weren't fun encounters in the first game and despite efforts made to diversify the encounter in this one it still wasnt fun. The spawn of bogdo and force tear double bogdo fight didn't even feel satisfying to beat, I just felt relieved i wouldn't have to think about them anymore.
