The first Mega Man X game is one of my favorite games of all time. But, can I say the same for its sequel?
In terms of graphics, animations are still fluid and the character designs look fantastic. The level design is still superb and the new mavericks are well designed. The music took a bit of a hit, but then again, it's hard to beat the X1 soundtrack. My personal favorite songs from X2 are Crystal Snail, Flame Stag, the intro stage, the stage select, and Bubble Crab(which got an amazing remix in X5). The gameplay is the same, with some slight changes. Certain bugs from X1 are fixed and the dash is now a permanent part of X's moveset instead of an unlockable.
However, if there's one reason I don't go back to X2 as much as the first game, it's because of the difficulty. I don't know why, but X2 is piss easy compared to the rest of the series. I wouldn't call myself a "god gamer", but throughout my playthrough, I only died once, and that was only because I barely had any health going into Wheel Gator's boss fight. The maverick's fight patterns are easy to spot, meaning that you could very easily wipe the floor with them. Hell, even the Sigma stages were a breeze.
The story of X2 is as follows: 6 months after the events of X1, 3 reploids called Serges, Violen, and Agile plan on rebuilding Zero. However, they have an ulterior motive as they intend on using him for evil. Meanwhile, 8 new mavericks have banded together and it's up to X to not only stop these new mavericks but also save Zero from Serges, Violen, and Agile. X2's story isn't as "in your face" as X1, it does its job very well. And believe me, that's a compliment considering how the later games are.
Overall, while I do prefer X1, Mega Man X2 is still a solid platformer that is worth your time. If you want to play it for yourself, it's available on the Mega Man X Legacy Collection, as well as the other X games.
