3/5 ★ – MissMolly's review of Super Mario Odyssey.
*This review has been revised*
In my original review of Super Mario Odyssey, which I wrote after completing the main storyline and defeating Bowser, I called it probably the best Mario game to date. After spending many more hours with the game since then I no longer agree with that statement. It is incredibly repetitive and tedious.
There is absolutely no justification for this game having 880 moons. Even collecting the 500 required to unlock the final kingdom was a boring chore. It's not the high number that I have a problem with, I actually don't mind collectathons, it's that there is a severe lack of variety and you end up doing the same thing over and over and over just hoping a moon will pop-up. Ground pound over here, ground pound over there. Throw your hat at this, throw your hat at that. Thrilling. Revisiting the kingdoms once the moon rocks activate does not change or add enough new content to make the exploration feel rewarding or exciting in anyway.
I will say I enjoyed my first run through the game up to the final boss (I despise the motion controls but Mario has a good set of movements that can be fun to play with) but beyond that it is absolutely not worth your time.
