3.5/5 ★ – MomagicLOL's review of ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN.
ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN on paper sounds atrocious. Roguelike boss rush Elden Ring with Fortnite-esque features and hero based abilities sounds like a fucking mess.
But what we have here is a mostly put together pretty good and mostly fresh experience that does teeter on repetition a bit too hard, but doesn’t stray away from being another FROMSOFTWARE experience.
Its obvious that Miyazaki’s next project THE DUSKBLOODS isn’t ready, so they enlisted the B-team to make this game, and instead of it just being another RPG, which let’s face it I’m sure all of us would’ve preferred even if it didn’t share the same level of quality that of Miyazaki’s other work, they made a multiplayer action game that’s not live service but more live service inspired.
I initially almost threw in the towel after the first couple of bosses were just too bullshit, and this is coming from someone who’s played each souls game through at least once.
This game being designed around 3-player co-op (solo play is optional but not recommended) and has no form of communication of any sort. No game chat, no texts chat, nothing.
This game is so evidently catered towards having friends online to play with you instead of queuing up with randoms online. The amount of IDIOTS I’ve come across with my time on this game was nothing short of 95% of them. Like it was genuinely frustrating when I wanted to play this game with friends, but they were either not available or are already 3-stacked. It reminds you who the 4th friend in the group is lmao!
Performance was overall solid on PC via Steam, didn’t really have any issues beyond some sometimes slow queue times and one random lag out, but otherwise? This game feels more put together than base Elden Ring in a lot of ways in terms of technical detail.
Overall, I think ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN is a solid and mostly refreshing entry in the FROMSOFTWARE souls franchise. It takes liberties of trying something new for the genre, and it proves that it both works but that it also proves it should be a one time thing for this franchise to experiment with Battle Royale elements and concepts.
For $40, you can get your moneys worth (if you have friends)
