4.5/5 ★ – MrGeneric's review of The Last of Us Remastered.
4.5 - Excellent
Simply put, it's one of the highest rated games of all time for a reason. The story of The Last of Us is fantastic. Even playing it years after having watched a playthrough of the game, the story still hit just as hard even when I knew all of the twists and turns. Incredibly well written characters, some beautifully scenic environments and an emotionally charged soundtrack all elevate a great narrative.
If anything, my main gripes of the game come from the gameplay. It didn't totally click with me. I eventually adjusted to it and warmed up to the gameplay, but I still have some major personal gripes.
Stealth just didn't work for me, and that's largely thanks to my other major issue with the AI. First of all, Ellie I love you BUT STOP BLOCKING ME. The amount of times I got caught because Ellie blocked my only way back into cover was ludicrous. On top of that, the AI rarely ever go 10 seconds without being in close distance of each other. You wait what feels like minutes to finally have one separate themselves, just to have the shortest time window to kill them or else you get caught. What's the solution to that problem? Throwing a glass bottle or brick? Sure, if you want literally every enemy AI in close proximity to hear it. They rarely had enough distance between them to only bait one person out with the sound cue.
So TLDR to myself, skill issue. But that just meant these hands were rated E for everyone. Still though, gameplay issues aside everything else about the game was so good I still rate it very highly. It might not be one of my favourites on a subjective level, I certainly understand the objective hype around the game.
