Far Cry 6 Review Written by: Vic Brubacher III Introduction Spoiler Alert! Far Cry 6 being the new entry in an already established franchise had some pretty high anticipation. The Far Cry games are hugely known for their iconic villains and with Far Cry 6, it exceeds expectations when it comes to that by picking the best villain actor in the industry right now, Giancarlo Esposito. He is best known for portraying Gus from Breaking Bad and Moff Gideon from The Mandalorian. This time, Giancarlo is playing as President Anton Castillo, which you get to meet almost right away. The story of Far Cry 6 centers around the character Dani Rojas as she tries to escape the island of Yara. This island is very similar to Cuba but is not Cuba as it still exists in this world. Yara is run by Aforementioned President Castillo, who promises stability with his creation of Viviro. It is a new cancer treatment developed by the tobacco that is grown on Yara. The president announces a draft to put people to slave work in the tobacco fields. After your failed escape of the island, you join the rebels, better known as Libertad, and that is where it all truly begins. Gameplay I believe gameplay is where Far Cry 6 shines other than its visuals which I will touch on later on in this review. Even though it has very limited character customization. Being only able to choose whether you play as the male or female version of Dani isn't necessarily bad. And your other customization comes from the different gear you collect during your play through but this gear is more than cosmetic. They each have different stats and perks that affect the overall gameplay. Yara is said to be the biggest map ever in a Far Cry game so of course you will have other means of transportation other than your feet. You also have access to all sorts of vehicles. On land, you can drive cars, ATVs, jeeps, trucks and even ride horses. But you can also travel by plane or helicopters. The only downfall with this though is that you will need to take out AA guns if you want to fly in certain parts of the map. And occasionally you will want to travel on the water. How else to travel on water than a boat right? Nope, you will also have access to jet skis and even hover boats that can actually kind of fly but still are limited if there is an AA gun in the area. You think playing as a rebel was going to be a walk in the park? Think again. You will get into many combat scenarios whether it is on foot or in vehicles. There is a lot of close quarters combat but I always tried to survey the area first from afar and pick off people with my one shot sniper. Other weaponry you have access to consists of side arms, assault rifles, submachine guns, light machine guns and even rocket launchers. But that's not it, you also had an arsenal of unconventional weaponry such as nail guns, slingshots and even a backpack launcher known as supremo. Just think of Boba Fett’s backpack but better. You could even use equipment like grenades and throwing knives but found myself not really using them. While all of this combat was going on, you should be monitoring two things. First of which is your player’s rank which is known as rank level. This would determine how tough you were and how hard areas of the map were, which would change as you got stronger. Some areas would stack more personnel and fortify more while others there would be a higher presence of helicopters. The second thing to monitor is the notoriety level. This would go up the more NPC bad guys you would kill and once it reached a certain level, El Presidente would send his special forces after you and they were challenging but nothing too overwhelming. As for some minor parts of the game, just as important was the base building and the amigo’s system. You could upgrade different bases which provided you with resources to upgrade your gear while the amigo system provided you with an animal companion that had different abilities or purposes. Just depended if you chose the dog, alligator, rooster, crippled dog, black panther or the cyber dog. Mechanics/Controls None of the previous content I covered would not matter if the mechanics and controls were terrible and I’m here to tell you, the controls were easy to learn and were your run of the mill set up. As I stated before, this map is huge and there is no way I was traveling through it even with cars and planes. And I really enjoyed the fast travel system in Far Cry 6 for two reasons. One, it was quick, barely any loading screen. And second, you had an option to airdrop on a location which came in handy if I needed to get to hire up areas near my marked location. I touched on the battles early but wanted to circle back to it quickly. I made it seem like it was easy and I was unstoppable. Definitely not true. You could get wrecked and die quickly if you did not play each situation differently and strategically. These battles could happen during the capturing of checkpoints, taking out military zones, or eliminating AA guns, which all had purpose and meaning as you watched as your rebels were taking over and cornering Castillo. Graphics/Sound Most of you should know and those that are new, welcome to my reviews, but graphics and visuals are one of the most important aspects of a game for me. And from the intro that set the story into motion to the WTF moment at the end, everything looked beautiful and very detailed. I would stop what I was doing just to take screenshots. All the characters were very detailed and voiced very very good as well. And wow, the water! I do not know what Ubisoft does, but in most of their games, the water is the best in the industry. It looks real, from the natural motions to the interactions with the vehicles. Replay Value As opposed to my last review I did on Biomutant, Far Cry 6 actually has plenty of content you can do once you beat the main story. You can go back and take over all the checkpoints and other military installations all over Yara. While doing that, I am sure you can also work on the treasure hunts or guerrilla missions. And if you want a change of pace, a less serious but still competitive activity, go complete all of the Grand Premio races and rooster fights with the roosters you collected during your play through. And there is still more. You can go through and complete all roughly 28 different Yara stories which act as your traditional side quests in Far Cry 6. And for the perfectionists, there are of course collectibles to find that will keep you busy. If that is not enough for you and you want more Far Cry 6, then there is the Insurgency that is unlocked once you beat the game. These are weekly missions you can complete and take out Insurgent leaders. Guess what? There's more. Far Cry 6 is being supported with post release content via the season that will add more content over the months after its release for you to enjoy. Verdict This was the first Far Cry game I have ever played and it feels like I have been missing out. A lot of fun, enjoyable characters and an intense story. But it wasn't all rainbows and butterflies. Some issues I had with Far Cry 6 consisted of was with the AI. On the roads, every vehicle that drove by you would beep for no reason or even try to run you over. And while you would enter or leave your guerrilla camps, it would switch from first person to third person which seemed very odd. And while traversing the world I experienced two issues. When parachuting or using your flight suit, you would die for no reason if you hit anything, even at slow speeds. And when driving the tank, for some reason you could run over or break anything such as trees or guard rails. And this last issue I had may not have been a total Far Cry 6 problem, but with Xbox’s quick resume feature, it would never work. It would load in then send me back to the main menu every time. But overall, Far Cry 6 was a great game that I highly recommend you check out ASAP. If you have never played a Far Cry game before, no need to worry, they have no connection and this is a perfect time to jump in. In the end, I give Far Cry 6 an 8 out of 10. Reviewed on: Xbox Series X
