4.5/5 ★ – MsPerseus's review of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.
This is a very underrated game that I would recommend to anyone, including newcomers to RPGs. The story evolves over time in such a way that feels real, starting with a very clear objective and turning into the discovery of a lost era and a tragedy that may befall ours. The characters are very likeable (except for a special one, or two), and as the game progresses the castaways will become a big family (your family!). I ended up loving their personalities and wanting to talk with them at every given opportunity.
The gameplay is easy to understand, it's fun and can be mastered in interesting ways. Creating combos, dashing and jumping around. Is fast paced, but easy to follow.
The exploration of the island may be boring for some or exciting for others, depends on your personal taste. It is good, just not for everyone.
The graphics are decent and good at times, thought I wouldn't call them beautiful some landscapes are astonishing. However, the switch version is not that great in dock mode (I played the whole game in portable mode, which I recommend), altought cutscenes and FP's are mostly stable. I would recommend the Ps4 version if you want to play it on TV.
And the music is really good, I wish they were more songs. Some are really beautiful while others encourage me to smash buttons and kill the dinosaurs-like monsters following the rhythm.
Overall, the story is good, the characters incredible, the gameplay and music combine perfectly & it's short for an RPG. And, while it's looks may discorage some, I'll say it's one of the best RPG's I have ever played. I will miss the characters, all of them. (Except that one that everybody knows). Play it!
