3/5 ★ – NiGHTS108's review of Kirby Tilt n' Tumble.
My 300th game! :D
What a bizarre little experiment this turned out to be. You know, there’s honestly a case for Kirby Tilt ‘N’ Tumble being one of the most experimental Nintendo games ever. This one is very gimmicky, relying quite heavily on motion controls. Indeed, Kirby Tilt ‘N’ Tumble is a Gameboy Colour game with a built in accelerometer to the cartridge, which allows for this gimmick. It’s honestly quite the impressive piece of work, I’ll say now I didn’t play this on original hardware, instead opting for the recent Nintendo Switch Online rerelease of the game which also uses motion controls, and it’s also not 2001 so I can’t exactly comment on how well this game performed in its time but if the NSO release is anything to go off of then sure. It’s good, if a little oversensitive. It’s also worth noting that this game has quite a few digitised voice clips which surprised me, not a big deal or anything, I just think it’s neat. Sadly though I don’t think this game itself is anything particularly special outside of the novelty, especially nowadays. Like don’t get me wrong this is still my favourite of the three Kirby Gameboy games I’ve played this year so far, but it’s still not amazing or anything. This game is surprisingly pretty difficult, it seems like they overestimated how well this controls as it’s nowhere near as precise as something like Super Monkey Ball, yet there’s still a number of areas where you have to be quite accurate with your movements. Level design isn’t particularly super interesting, it doesn’t seem like they really had a ton of ideas as around halfway through levels start to get a little same-y and the gimmicks they do have aren’t particularly interesting. I guess it’s saved by the fact it is easy to power through this game in a solid hour or two. Nowadays I think Kirby Tilt ‘N’ Tumble is best appreciated as something of a curiosity. The unfortunate reality is it kind of plays like a tech demo for a sequel that doesn’t really exist. I do have quite a bit of respect for this game though, as it’s certainly unique and ambitious. Kirby Tilt ‘N’ Tumble isn’t the worst, but it’s not something you’ll get a lot out of seeing through to the end.
