4/5 ★ – Niebeer's review of Sifu.
When I first saw the trailers for this game I thought it'd be a cool game with flashy combat but easy and light on substance when it came to the actual execution level, similar to the Batman Arkham games. Well the combat is definitely flashy but its far from easy. It took me a while to get the hang of it, having to learn enemy patterns and knowing when to either parry or avoid, but once it clicked and I got into the groove, the game became very addicting. So even though I've beaten it now, I will come back to it to try and finish it at a younger age. Aside from the strong gameplay mechanics, the game features a variety of aesthetics when it comes to stages. Stage 1 for example: The Squats, is a dirty and run down series of buildings which clearly took inspiration from movies like The Raid and Oldboy. The music is varied and gets you pumped when you're surrounded by goons or facing one of the cool bosses at the end of the stage. Overall I'd recommend the game to those who love martial arts movies and challenging but fair games.
