4/5 ★ – Nokt's review of Ashen.
tldr: Good game, has some jank, buy on sale.
Its sad that this game is only listed as mixed, I've had a good time in both playthroughs. So far I've played this game solo (EGS) and co-op (steam) with a friend.
Solo: There is some issues with the ally AI. They can straight up just disappear and aren't always the smartest AI, but its serviceable. Don't be afraid to rely on chucking spears at groups of enemies instead of trying to head them all at the same time.
Co-op: I think the original intention was for this multiplayer to work like Journey. Anyone that is in the area and on the same quest can take over your ally AI. The person taking over the AI will retain all of their gear, but appear as one of the ally AI. You can set a multiplayer filter to only find specific people and it usually takes about 30 seconds if you are looking for each other. There are 2 restrictions, you cannot be in town together and you cannot start a dungeon with one player and finish with someone else. It really easy to find your friend after leaving town, just fly to the same location and wait for the matchmaking to kick in.
This is really just a chill souls-like. Its got great charm, the music is excellent, the town being built while you help out the villages is really cool. The weapons do kind of all blend together, but as you only get so many upgrade materials in the beginning I feel like you kind of choose what you want to use and get to mess around later when you get an abundance of upgrade materials. I slept on making spears in the beginning of the game, but there are so many situations in which the are useful, like pulling enemies or teleporting to get items.
