2.5/5 ★ – Nydelius's review of The Callisto Protocol.
Platform: ps5
This is my 1st entry to the survival horror genre, figuring it might make me like survival horror games but it did not.
1st of all, I heard the stuttering in the game is bad but it is mostly patched, so take in note that there might be a few stutters or so on other platforms.
I'm going to start with combat since that is the main focus on the game. It is not good. It is decent when there is only 1 enemy on the screen but when there is multiple, that is when it is horrendous. The dodging mechanic is not bad for a single enemy but multiple enemies just ruins the combat. Which makes the game get knock down on enjoyment level for me because of how often they just throw massive waves of enemies at you. The combat is also kinda repetitive after getting the gun and playing with the combat. It's just like dodge, hit, shoot, do that 2 times more just to get an enemy to die and then repeat. It becomes unbearable at the train scene, they were just throwing waves and waves of enemies at you and since the dodging with multiple enemies so shit, you will die so many times due to not being about to dodge the guy, that is not in front of you, attacks.
The game is counted as a horror survival but what part of it is horror? Yes there are some jumpscare and horror scene but they are cheap as fuck at how predictable they are. The worst of it all is the fucking the enemies they put at the corner to get a cheap scare at players that after a while I just got used to it. There are also vents and doors jumpscare and that's about the only time they will have jumpscares. I feel like they should've count this as a action survival.
The story is really cool on paper, guy delivers shipments to a prison on Jupiter, crash, goes to prison and have to try escaping from it because of the zombie-like outbreaks. But I feel like after setting that up there is no care for the story anymore. The characters are bland and when *spoiler alert* they killed off the character Elias, they expected me to feel sad about it? I don't know but I know for a fact that I don't think it makes sense how Elias died. From what I read online, Elias died from a lack of oxygen but Elias had his helmet on with the glass panel. So unless his suit was destroyed which makes less sense since Jacob's suit wasn't damaged at all so how does Elias's suit completely break? Either way his death doesn't make sense at all. Also the infection of Dani too, I feel like they wanted me to feel the urge to save Dani as much as Jacob but I feel like it was just padding and fluff to make the game longer. Honestly the game feels like a bunch of fluff and that is about it. The ending too feel unfinished and rushed.
The only thing that I think was amazingly done was the atmosphere and environment. It was beautifully done, it really feel like the place is in absolute shit and scary. There is a lot of to like about the level design. Not only that but the character animations and facial was also great I think. It was really nice to see it but the only nitpicked is the elevator level selected animations. It was a little junky compared to the others.
Overall Callisto protocol was a letdown that hurts me. I wanted to enjoy and like the game but I couldn't with how they handle the story and the combat. The game felt like the devs just didn't take in mind the combat and how it handles with multiple enemies. The art design and animations teams deserve a fucking raise though.
