3/5 ★ – Onahx's review of Shantae and the Seven Sirens.

I’ve been a fan of the Shantae games ever since I stumbled upon Pirate’s Curse way back when but no game has ever quite lived up to that one— this one doesn’t either but it’s closest the series has come to it. Definitely the most bang for your buck with a Shantae title. As far as I can remember this one has the most content by a long shot. Though a lot of the collectibles do feel like busy work for 100% more than anything. The enemy card system is a really cool way to customize your gameplay experience. The writing is also definitely some of the best. Squid Baron continues to steal every scene he’s in. Most notably— this game finally finds a way to make the series’s trademark dancing and animal transformations work seamlessly. Instead of stopping to dance to transform, all the animal transformations have a single use which you just hit a button for and Shantae will instantly do it, while dancing is reserved for magic abilities which happen about as fast as dancing in Half-Genie Hero did. Definitely the right direction to take the series’ gameplay in as the pervious game almost felt like a step backwards in that regard. All of that on top of some incredibly clean and fun animation make for an overall very solid game. Pirate’s Curse would still be the Shantae game I recommend people— but this is an easy number 2.
