3/5 ★ – Onahx's review of South of Midnight.

South of Midnight is not groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination. Everything here you’ve seen elsewhere probably done better. Doesn’t stop it from being a solid game regardless. The setting and music are by far its strongest elements. This mythical American South feels alive and gorgeously rendered. And the music— like oh my god. The score may be the mostly truly unique element here and it never lets up. The semi-parkour and 3D platforming is engaging if not a little too hand-holdy and the story is a satisfying tale of grief and hindsight with plenty of memorable characters The combat is where the game leaves the most wanting. It’s a very bare bones hack and slash with lots of visual flare but little dynamic about how it actually plays out. The skill tree is also super railroaded and doesn’t actually change how you play the game by that much by the end. Regardless though, I had a fun time with South of Midnight. I could see this becoming a cult classic in the similar vein to something like Alice Madness Returns one day.
