2.5/5 ★ – PenguinKiddo's review of Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.
An Ambitious Adventure
Sonic Adventure has always been a polarizing game to me. It’s reputation has always given me a mix of emotions whenever I come around to play this game. You either love it or hate it, and despite all the issues I suffered though I still found myself having a fun time!
The game has so many great ideas like multiple characters, a story that’s split into multiple episodes, connected hub worlds, and an incredibly varied soundtrack!
However, each piece is tampered with poor audio mixing, choppy animations, hit or miss acting, clipping through objects, strange collision, and even having mechanics that turn some stages into a joke. (I’m looking at you Skychase!)
Never the less, by the time I got to Amy and Gamma, I saw how well the story develops these characters and how much lore they added to the series. The soundtrack is so unique and really does enhance the entire experience! The hub world was a little annoying to navigate, but after a few stories I had a better idea of where to go and got rewarded for exploring! Plus, characters like Knuckles and Amy are honestly super fun to play!
I was afraid I was going to hate this game by the end and end up singing the tune that many have sung about this game for a while. But if you put up with its flaws, you might find a title that shows Sonic is capable of great things!
Open your heart, and I’m sure you’ll find something to love about Sonic Adventure!
