2.5/5 ★ – PenguinKiddo's review of Transformers: Cybertron Adventures.
Before jumping in to Cybertron Adventures, I was reminded of the very poor review scores this game received from critics at the time. But then I watched someone play through the game, and I honestly didn’t understand why it was so despised. And now, having played it myself, I don’t think this game is awful at all.
It’s just ehhhhh… mediocre?
The worst crime Cybertron Adventures commits is just being a dull side story compared to its HD brother. Half of this game is less fun than the other. If you’re not blasting bots, you’re going in a straight line with little to no player involvement. You have two campaigns, choosing to play as either the Autobots or the Decepticons. I started with the Decepticons, and like their name suggests, I was actually feeling tricked into thinking “Hey, this game isn’t half bad!” But once I started playing as the Autobots, I was ready for the game to wrap up with how slow and borrrreing it felt.
It’s not even like it’s a long game, clocking in at less than two hours! But after say, three missions, you’ve practically seen all it has to offer. It’s a decent On-Rails shooter, but lacking in what makes them compelling. Enemy variety, interesting obstacles, crazy boss fights, I could keep going! The only aspects fighting for my engagement were the voice acting, music, and snappy gunplay.
Look, its nowhere near as bad as what the critics say, but it’s unfortunately unremarkable. Wii players during the “War for Cybertron” days certainly got the short end of the stick, so maybe that plays a part in the poor reception? I don’t think there’s anything wrong with checking it out if you’re a fan of that era of Transformers, but I would give a pass for anyone else who was curious. There’s greater Transformers games than meets the eye…
