5/5 ★ – Pixelguy9's review of Dead Space.
As my first true introduction into the horror genre, Dead Space provided me with an experience I could not call anything less then perfect. This game is utterly terrifying; exploring cosmic, body, and psychological horror, allowing for heart pounding sequences and moments of intense dread.
If Dead Space excels in one department, it would be immersion. The lack of a traditional HUD, the use of holographic pop-ups in place of UI elements, and the feeling of confronting something more powerful and horrifying then you could possibly understand, build this immersion masterfully.
Dead Space's gameplay is another place where it truly shines. Every weapon is satisfying to use against the Necromorphs, and the fact that all but one of your weapons are not designed to kill is a super interesting approach. Having the game set on a mining station allows for the unique nature of these tools to shine, alluding to their original purpose while providing hints at their new roles as monster slaying devices.
Graphically, the game is top-notch, and always blew me away with the designs of its environments, enemies, and characters. The Dead Space remake is one of the few cases of a revisitation of a classic title being so good, the act of returning to the original product is out of the question.
The chances of getting a Dead Space 2 remake someday are small, but I will continue to hold out hope for my new favourite sci-fi horror franchise.
