4/5 ★ – PoorAndCurly's review of DOOM: The Dark Ages.
id ratcheted up the badassery while toning down the kinetic dance that was in Eternal. Much easier and way less of a delicate balance than Eternal. I really liked managing the different ammo types and figuring out what tool is going to do the job best, that's all missing in Dark Ages. I never really ran out of ammo with my favorite weapons, and there was a solid amount of stuff I had never even used. That said, everything you do in Dark Ages is so cool and feels so satisfying. Shout out to the chainshot and the shield.
There are sections where you'll jump and land next to a gathering of weak demons and splatter them with your landing impact. It doesn't serve any gameplay purpose besides the fact that it's really cool and feels good. That seems like the ethos here for this game. The dragon and mech are not necessarily that interesting and have pretty basic gameplay elements, but it sure is cool smashing buildings in a Pacific Rim mech. I still had a blast, but it's a shift coming from Eternal and even Doom 2016.
Side note: they didn't really do anything super cool with the medieval setting, I wished they leaned more into it instead of keeping the sci-fi trimming. Also, music does its job, but nothing stood out like in the past two games.
