3/5 ★ – Pops's review of Miitopia.

Pros: Miitopia is a cute, quirky, and fun tale of friendship... and losing your face. Making your friends' Miis and seeing them inspire the party with song & dance as their leather vests attempt to hide shredded pectorals just moments before another party member fires them out of a cannon is just a glimpse into the hilarious antics Miitopia has to offer. The silly dialogue is further enhanced by the player's ability to masterfully place friends, family and famous icons into fitting roles. Miitopia is, undoubtedly, charming and funny to boot. Cons: The turn-based combat is basic, with limited variation dependent on each character's chosen personality/class. However, battle is mostly uninspired and is just there to remind you this is a game and not a visual novel. I eventually resorted to the auto-battle feature in the late game once my party could reliably tackle enemy encounters and opting for manual selection for bosses. My biggest gripe, however, was that Miitopia overstays its welcome. Without spoiling too much, the player is led to believe the game will come to a close at a certain point. Then...? The game continues on; for another 15 hours! It felt as though the game had ended and you had to begin again with the same over-arching story. Unfortunately, by then all of Miitopia's novelty has worn off. The blurbs of dialogue have become all too familiar, there are no additional party members to create, and a number of fetch-quests to keep you busy as you mindlessly barrel through enemies towards the story's climax. There's even post-game content but by the end I couldn't stomach anymore. Conclusion: Miitopia is charming and whimsical at its best, and grueling at its worst. Playing in short, casual bouts might sustain the average player for a more enjoyable experience but, for a seasoned gamer, the simple turn-based combat begins to feel stale and random to a fault at times. I may have given Miitopia a 3.5-star review if not for its unexpectedly lengthy playtime.
