2.5/5 ★ – Quiet_Robe's review of The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures.
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
The first time a chapter's end left me unfulfilled and sad, I let it slide because I spoiled myself and read that the victim wasn't dead, softening the blow of the depressing end of a chapter.
Then the game does it again with a not-guilty verdict of a guy who became more and more suspicious as the trial went on. Instead of letting me solve the mystery and put the real perpetrator to justice, the guy gets killed off while I'm trapped in a dialogue with a pink haired anime girl I've never seen before who just shows up. Honestly it feels like the game was mocking me.
What I liked: Aesthetically, the game might be the best in the series. The new element of 'Summation Examination' and the presence of a jury is great and entertaining.
What I disliked: Herlock Sholmes. I believe that both his unappealling character and the investigation sequences featuring him as a central character represent things I dislike. The main characters just aren't as memorable as in the original PW trilogy. The assistant is like Maya but without the quirkiness, Von Zieks is a toned down Edgeworth. Lastly, I disliked the chapter that was solely investigation, neither am I a fan of the 'Dance of Deduction'. Trials are always the best part of these games, but that's just my preference.
Fulfilling chapter endings are sacrificed in exchange for an over-arching story. Like in the og games, there's a balance that can be made between making chapters part of a bigger whole but still letting the player wrap things up near the chapter's end.
I expected to give the game more stars as i finished, but I'm giving up as the game let me down twice already.
