Flashback Review
I finally got the chance to sit down and play Arkham City, possibly due to the announcement for Batman Arkham Knight. Arkham City has been hailed as a fan favorite in the Batman Arkham series. Especially one friend of mine who is an avid Batman fan. For myself, I thought it was an awesome game, but not just as good as Arkham Asylum, in my opinion. Nonetheless, it certainly has its high points, including a rich roster of characters and expansive open-world settings.
Arkham City takes the open-world concept to new heights, building on what Arkham Asylum lacked. Players can soar through the air and scale buildings using Batman's iconic grappling hook and Cape to Glide through the occupied city. Unlike its predecessor, where Batman was confined to running through corridors. You can eavesdrop on prisoners for their humorous conversations. There are more characters in this game, like Deadshot, Victor Zsasz, and even Clayface, and there are more Easter eggs in this game. such as encounters with Calendar Man. By setting your console to a holiday date, you can unlock stories of his historical crimes. Not only do you play as Batman, but you can also play as Catwoman. Her design will never be made in today’s modern gaming. But man, that was peak design.
The question now is why I preferred Arkham Asylum over Arkham City. I think the story in this game is not up to par compared to Asylum. Hugo Strange is the main villain of this one, and by the end of the game, it got switched up to Joker as a twist. Arkham City's plot revolves around a wild goose chase for an antidote to counteract Joker's infected blood and infect the entire city, leading to a complete fetch quest of finding an antidote. Moreover, striving for 100% completion in Arkham City can be quite the ordeal. Notably, the Augmented Reality Training Challenge. I remember the challenges being stressful at times, and you must have patience to complete each one because you will fail a lot.
Batman: Arkham City Still holds up well in terms of graphics and gameplay and is considered by many people the best in the Batman: Arkham Games. It's definitely the peak era of Rocksteady games, giving it their all in making one of the best open-world games in the 2010’s. While I hold a special place in my heart for this title, Batman: Arkham Asylum edges it out on my list of favorites. For Batman enthusiasts, Arkham City is a must-play.
