Flashback Review
If anybody experiences the time in the late 2000’s, there was a flame war between three First-Person Shooter franchises: Halo, Call of Duty and Battlefield. After the massive success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, pretty much DICE had to step it up and decided to spark a little competition with the release of the sequel to Bad Company. I got Bad Company 2 first before the first game due to good reviews and played multiplayer first before I jumped into the story mode of the first game. Looking back, I would say that Bad Company 2 is a far superior multiplayer game than Modern Warfare 2. Maybe it's because of the Modern Warfare 2 Voice Chat system (Good Times), feeling salty with my K/D ratio or Tactical Nuke losses. This game is considered better than the first game and I would agree, but far from perfect since there are some things that are missing from the first game that made Bad Company a unique spin-off of the franchise.
The big improvement on this game is its gameplay and presentation. From the first game I reviewed, I mentioned the Gameplay was rough and it does need a good polishing for it to stand out and the DICE team did a good job on improving the frostbite engine and further improve on enhancing a lot of things for the game, most notably the new weapons, graphics and even the HUD Interface which for sure some of them got carried over to Battlefield 3. The presentation for this game does improve with its cinematic cutscenes and highly orchestrated music that you begin to notice the drastic changes on what Battlefield series was originally known for and its trying to get the young audience who loved the Call of Duty Modern Warfare games to play this.
Even though it’s a huge improvement on multiplayer, I do question the single player campaign mode on this. Don’t get me wrong, The Story mode for this game is great but they have to tone down the comedy from the first game and switch to a more serious one which loses its charm. But at least the cast are more fleshed out than before. Some people I know can forgo the comedic style, but that is what makes the single player campaign from the first game actually memorable. First game has you finding stolen Gold Bars while in this entry, you fight the Russians like any other FPS game we played in the 2000’s and 2010’s and I have to look up the plot on Bad Company 2 as a recap after playing this years ago. I’m sure this was during the whole Gritty and Modern Military Shooter style trend of Modern Warfare 2 and pretty much the writers for this game would just take notes from it and apply it with Bad Company 2.
Improved Gunplay, Cutscenes and Multiplayer but slightly holds back the Story Campaign since I preferred the first game to have the edge on story. Yet, Bad Company 2 still holds up as one of the best Battlefield games and I would check this game out after you finished the first game or you can just jump straight into this game anyways if you don’t care about characters or story and just shoot things. It really sucks that there is no Bad Company 3 and the ending for this game is a cliffhanger hinting for another Bad Company game. Figures that EA is the publisher to this. To make matters worse, Both Bad Company 1 and 2 are delisted from the digital stores so you have to find this game out in the wild for a physical copy.
