Flashback Review
If you force me to watch the Dragon Ball GT anime as a torture device, my response would be “Is that the best you got?” Dragon Ball GT is bad from a fans’ perspective, but to me, it's watchable. Of course it's bad, but you still gotta love the Super Saiyan 4 design. But I digress, with the hype of Dragon Ball GT as a kid, I remember the Game Boy Advance games of the Dragon Ball franchise. Notoriously the Legacy of Goku games. Which I still haven’t beat yet since I remember those were challenging games at the time. But I remember Dragon Ball GT Transformation which is at least easier since it plays like a side scroller beat-em’ up.
You play as Goku, Pan and Trunks and you just go through the GT Story franchise that only covers the first two story arcs: Black Star Dragon Ball Saga and the Baby Saga. The game is linear and you have three characters, Goku, Pan and Trunks as three lives and you can’t switch characters. You perform combos and do special moves which require Ki energy. You can charge up your Ki energy to refill, but you are open to being attacked. Some of these levels tend to drag on and you actually want to end until you finally approach the level boss.
Looking into this game again, I can tell the sprites and the enemies aged badly. Some of the enemies look like cartoon characters like that wolf with a big head and small body. Some enemies just didn’t fit very well in the Dragon Ball Universe in terms of its Akira Toriyama art style. The sprite animation looks pretty choppy and even most of the cast don’t even look good in sprite form. If there is a difference between 8-bit to 16-bit, this feels like a 12-bit sprite game. As you progress, you get to unlock other characters like Piccolo and Biker-Vegeta for the single player mode which built like an arcade game. And the Super Sayian 4 Goku segment in the finale is pretty cool.
I say this game barely got the 3-star average on my end. It's meh, but not as bad as you want to pull your hair out. I have no problems beating this game as well. Although, I didn’t feel like I accomplished anything, so I went into my next game anyway. There are far worse Dragon Ball games and this is tolerable. If you are a fan of Streets of Rage, Final Fight or any other popular side scroller beat-em' ups, I say this is worth a try. If you are huge Dragon Ball fans and you admittedly think GT is not all that bad, then this is a plus.
