Flashback Review
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance was the game I notoriously remembered picking this game for rental. The game was so bloody that Ma and Pa took the game back the same day and couldn’t play a Mortal Kombat game unless I went to a relative or friends’ house and played their copy or until I was mature enough. Fast forward, I was given the ok for getting the Mortal Kombat PlayStation 2 Collection which included Deception, Shaolin Monks and Armageddon, Deadly Alliance was not in the collection so I have to go find this game in the wild. And If I remember right, I think I got this at a local GameStop at the time when they started selling 6th gen games for a cheap Deadly Alliance was a solid Mortal Kombat entry, but not that great since people never cared about this one which could be the reason why it wasn’t in the PS2 collection in the first place. However, it does have its moments.
Looking back at this game, you can tell the 3D Graphics are starting to show for early 2000’s look. That was when Midway was still using those types of 3D Art Graphics for their games like CarnEvil and Gauntlet Dark Legacy. The 3D Character Models at the Character Selection screen look pretty weird. But It's cool seeing Reptile completely full Lizard mode though. Nobody cares about Moloch as the Sub-Boss for this game compared to Goro, Kintaro or even Motaro. If I remember anything that stood out for this game was mainly the story that happened to Liu Kang and the formed alliance of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi which was pretty cool. I do question the roster pick for the lineup. I mean, you got Sub Zero, Scorpion, Kano and Kung Lao, all the classic characters except for Liu Kang. There are some forgettable ones like Mavado, Hsu Hao (lol), but there are some newcomers at the time like one of my personal favorites, Kenshi. I say the other Mortal Kombat games had a better roster than this.
Gameplay is good at best. The fatalities can be pretty wacky that make you scratch your head like Quan Chi’s Neck Stretch fatality. Deadly Alliance is the first of the series to implement a mechanic to have a secondary martial arts move and deadly weapon so you can switch fighting styles during a match. In Konquest mode, it's nothing but tutorial missions from the character you selected and it gets repetitive fast as you try to play this mode with every character. So really the story mode is only on Arcade Mode. This is also the first game to implement the Krypt Mode where you can save Koins and purchase goods such as concept art, Characters and Costumes. Overall,I had a good time playing this but none of my friends didn’t care about this game as we mostly played Deception, Armageddon and the more recent entries.
I really want to like Deadly Alliance and people say this is better than Mortal Kombat 4 and the two disappointing games of Mythologies and Special Forces. 2002 was a time Midway had to make or break and Deadly Alliance was their saving grace. But they could have done better though and it needed to be improved on and they sure did with the next entry, Deception. From the notable highlights and the weirdness of this entry, this is an ok game and I would check it out, but there are better Mortal Kombat games that you would rather play than this. But if you are curious anyways, this wouldn’t hurt to try.
