Flashback Review
I still love Resistance: Fall of Man and I knew that there is going to be a sequel to this game thanks to that cliffhanger ending. Resistance 2 was released two years after the first game and my bro and I were anticipated for this game since we loved playing local story co-op and even played it on Superhuman difficulty. Sure enough, once Resistance 2 came out, Critics gave this game a near perfect score. However, the audience gave it an average score and I might know its reasons and I think the audience were a little too harsh on the ratings personally.
Resistance 2’s story was really good as it immediately starts right where it left off from the first game. Instead of fighting the Chimera in the UK, now the battle is in the States as you play as Nathan Hale from the first game and is leading a team of infected soldiers like him called The Sentinels. This is arguably the best story campaign thanks to the boss fights like The Kraken and The Leviathan and there were some great level designs from San Fransisco to Chicago and it's graphically better than the grayness of the UK levels from the first game.
Aside from story mode, they have Multiplayer and Cooperative which leads me to the problems firsthand. I was excited to play this game only for the cooperative mode. but only to find out that Insomniac got rid of the Local Co-op Story Mode. I remembered that my bro and I got two PS3 controllers, booted up Resistance 2 and then discovered that we can’t play story mode together which left us in disbelief, so we had to share the controller after one of us died or finish a level for story mode. The Co-op campaign is still there, but it's transferred to Online Co-op and it's on a separate story with a few missions. Insomniac should have kept the story co-op mode since there can be ways to make it cooperative and I might assume it has something to do with affecting technical performance like low frame rates and lag. Or they just needed more sales revenue for the game. On the bright side though, I still enjoyed Online Co-op mode, but it can be difficult with only you and your partner. You have to play this game with other people if you want to beat the Missions easier. Now that the online servers are closed. It's almost impossible to beat the missions with only two people. Multiplayer was fun as well and I spent more time playing online than the first game to be honest.
I’m sure the lack of cooperative story mode was what made the game disappointing from actual fans but that is not the only problem from what I have heard. Insomniac has cut down the gameplay such as eliminating the weapons wheel from the first game which made it so good. Now, it's a 2-weapon system. II did not like it at first but I got used to it. I also remember people complaining that the game is too hard as enemies would target you instead of your AI partners. And you do move slowly as big enemies would fire missiles at you and you are going to die a lot in this game and the checkpoints can be somewhat unforgiving. I'm ok with challenging gameplay and I did not have a problem with it. Just Git Gud or change difficulty.
To me, Resistance 2 felt like two steps forward from the first game with improvements and somehow stumbled two steps back to the same state as the first game. But with a memorable single player campaign and fun online multiplayer that actually made it worthwhile at the time. If only they kept the Weapons Wheel and the local co-op story mode then this would be the best in the franchise. I still give this game a 5 due to my nostalgic memories and I understand people giving this a high 4. I think giving it 3 stars felt too harsh. A port of this game on PC should be made and Insomniac games should make that happen for its 20-year anniversary.
