4/5 ★ – RawMetal's review of Resistance 3.

System: PlayStation 3 Started: June 22, 2013 Ended: July 18, 2013 Flashback Review After finishing Gears of War 3, I immediately jumped into Resistance 3 as another co-op shooter with a friend and my bro. Playing Resistance 3 in 2013 was long overdue. My brother and I were huge Resistance fans after playing Fall of Man and 2 in the late 2000’s. What happened in the early 2010’s was that my brother started playing games on the Xbox 360 more than the PlayStation 3, and he originally got the PS3 during its first release. Basically, I carried the torch when I purchased Resistance 3 and finally played the co-op story mode whenever my brother wanted to take a break from playing Left 4 Dead and Halo Reach. Resistance 3 was a solid game but not up to par with the first two games in the mainline series. In the third game, you don’t play as the titular character Nathan Hale from the first two games; you play as one of his squadmates from the second game, Joseph Capelli. In each chapter, you travel across the United States, and your destination is New York to close a wormhole from the invasion of the Chimera. Insomniac Games tries something new by abandoning the military-themed shooter and becoming more of a post-apocalyptic shooter as you play as a normal civilian who was an ex-specialist. The story is the conclusion of the long war against the Chimera, and it was a great journey from start to finish. However, there's a downside to it. Resistance 3 Multiplayer is different from Resistance 2 in terms of a new HUD. You can now perform Killstreaks and activate them by using the D-Pad controls. I would say that Resistance 3 Multiplayer was arguably the best in the franchise, and I think it deserved better. But out of a sea of first-person shooter games that have been out since the early 2010's, Resistance 3 Multiplayer did not receive the love it deserved. I did play a little bit of it and had a blast playing multiplayer. Resistance 2 was still a great game, but the problem was that it added more generic first-person shooter elements such as regenerated health and a two-weapon-only system. Resistance 3 was going back to its roots from the first game, such as the return of health packs and multi-weapons, and best of all, they brought back Story Mode Co-op. Insomiac Games did try something new for this game, like the weapons you obtained have a leveling-up system; the more you use them, the more powerful they become. It's good in case you are stuck on a level and have to resort to using your best weapon to easily cheese your way through. However, if you want to level up your other games to become powerful, you must equip them and put them to good use. Resistance 3 felt like the conclusion of the whole Chimera outbreak, and there has not been another Resistance game since Burning Skies on the PlayStation Vita, and that game took place between the three games. Compared with the first two Resistance games, I think the third game took a bit of a foot-trip with its lack of set pieces and boss battles. Resistance 2 was best known for its boss fights. But there is not even a final battle in the third game. I even thought the guy you fought in the Philadelphia level would be an interesting final boss character, so that was a missed opportunity. I thought Capalli was an interesting character, but Nathan Hale was always the character I grew attached to. Insomniac really wanted to have that twist ending in Resistance 2, and the payoff was severe by having the side character finish the story. For its graphics, this one is below par. Everything felt brownish, especially the cutscenes, and I personally think it's a slight downgrade compared to its predecessors. With the Best Multiplayer and going back to its roots in Resistance Fall of Man, Resistance 3 was a great entry despite its minor flaws. I still preferred the first game and even Resistance 2 over the third game. However, I say don’t skip this if you are curious enough to see what happens at the end of the story.
