4.5/5 ★ – RaxKeith's review of Assassin's Creed® Odyssey.

8.7 This is a great game, but you should know what you kind of game you are playing before you start playing this. With so much content and customization, you have a lot of choices about how to play, but it is a long game and if you enjoy this type of an open world game, you'll love it. Combat in this game is pretty great. It relies less on combos and more on the abilities you unlock as you progress. And I loved the abilities as well as the customization that goes along with it. The armor is great, where you are always looking for the next legendary set to see what kind of a build you can make with it, and how well it might combine with some of the abilities. The weapons are also a big influence on how you might craft your current setup, which will be changing throughout the game and using different offensive powers to your advantage. One thing about the armor and weapon system I didn't like is how costly it is to upgrade your older stuff. The perks on them will scale up when you upgrade to your current level so even acquiring a weapon when you are a low level, if you like the "legendary perk" then you can upgrade and use it 20 levels later. But by the time you amass enough supplies to upgrade a full set of armour and weapons you might already be a few levels past when you might have decided to upgrade and already outgrown some equipment. Story and characters in this game I thought was great. I played all the way to the end of the DLCs and really loved all the relationships and interactions between most of the characters. even the side missions I found fun and interesting. One thing that I did not care about was the present day story. I never played AC Origins, so I felt like I was thrown into the middle on a story and had no idea what was going on. I suppose I can't blame the game too much for this, but because I didn't want to pay for the other game and play through it for a crazy amount of time, (I was more interested in Odyssey) I feel like there should have at least been a recap of sorts to get people caught up. Graphically this game looks great. It mostly feels good just running around doing your thing except in a few spots. The assassination animations were almost never lined up with where the weapon was and the character you were killing, it always just kind of slid around and didn't look good. Another major annoyance was the Horse AI. When you call your horse, the game makes it run in the direction you are running in and eventually you will auto mount it, sound great but works terribly. Usually what happens is the horse takes way too long to get to you, and you turn somewhere, or to go towards the horse, the horse starts running away from you cause it wants to go in the direction you are running. The Extra content in this game is also great. apart from the main storyline, you will find plenty of side quests to do and places to discover and clear out for loot. One thing that may bore you when playing the game is some of the repetitiveness. Most of the Forts are very similar in structure and what is inside. But one great thing about the game is with the different builds you can make for yourself, you can tackle these places in many different ways, trying not to be seen and slowly taking everyone out one by one. You can also just charge in there and start attacking people with a warrior loadout, or you could use your bow and snipe people from far away. This was one of the reasons I really didn't get bored, with so many abilities to try out I was always finding new ways to attack these places. When the game was first releasing DLC, they kept gradually releasing smaller storylines for people to play while waiting for the next DLC release. So now there are plenty of these side missions to play with a good amount of content included. The DLC was really good. The first story is more about family and takes place on the normal map. It was very good and I enjoyed the characters. The second DLC was great, and I was always excited about exploring another new map, and seeing what I could find. It kind of reminds of of the Witcher 3 DLCs in a way with the first being a shorter one where it more closely resemble the base game, and the second being adding a large map and more fantastical elements to the game. The Oikos shop was pretty neat, although it just felt like a way for people to very slowly get some items are microtransactions, where you would normally pay for them in the store (with real money). Overall this game was exactly what I was expecting and wanting it to be, a great, long game with plenty to do and just having some fun doing it.
