2/5 ★ – Red_Dead_Revolt's review of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
What an interesting game.
Clearly an outdated and exhausted attempt to make yet another live service game that NOBODY wants. I do not dislike live service games, there are just too many and the entire structure of the game is often comprised to fit into this model. The focus is player engagement and how much money can be made, not the art or enjoyment of the product. Sad.
This game is not terrible, its not even bad. It is not the train wreck everyone was expecting. Its fine and maybe even okay.
Gameplay is mostly good. Gunplay and abilities feel good. The actual gameplay encounters get repetitive, just kill guys over and over across different rooftops. The flow of movement never really feels right. Harley Quinn in particular feels super bad to try and move around with. You are constantly stopping and starting your movement and keeping non momentum going at all. Deadshot was my main and felt great to fly around and hover. King Shark and Boomerang are fine.
Graphically the game looks great and runs okay on console. I played on PS5 and noticed frame drops during really heavy combat segments. Iv heard PC is pretty rough so avoid that platform for now.
The game struggles with too much visual noise with too much shit happening on screen at once.
The city is designed well but unfortunately you will just be fighting across roof tops and never on the streets or anywhere else interesting.
Story is actually one of the highlights for me. I love when studios take risks and do something big like kill the Justice League. I know its been done a lot before in comics but never in a game like this with a pre-established universe that we know. It is kinda weird to see Rocksteady's Arkham universe version of the justice league. They all look and sound great, its just a shame they were introduced just to be killed off here. Lots of wasted potential and I would have preferred a game where we setup or play as the just league first.
The main cast and supporting cast are all great. Althought I think Boomerang in particular is annoying and terrible in this game.
There are some fun moments to be had that I will not spoil. Lots of fun deep cut DC characters show up and get time to shine. The jokes do not always land. Id say maybe 40% landed for me. Comedy is subjective but thats how I felt.
The story is left on a bad cliff hanger as they are once again forced to fit into this live service structure and continue the story through seasons.
The end game is where this game is at its worst and is just pure grind for samey looking weapons and gear. Just grind, get samey looking loot, play the same game modes on the same maps. That is the end game.
This is a game I can see myself possibly returning to for the free DLC, and even maybe buy a season pass. But Rocksteady needs to jump in and fix major issues with traversal and make the loot you get far more appealing. New map, characters, and better combat encounters could add legs and value to the game. We will see how the first season goes in March.
Overall I think this is not the game Rocksteady wanted to make nor should have. Its sad that such as talented studio has spent 7 years making THIS, and will continue to be focused on support this game for years to come.
Not a bad game but not what this team should be making. Not $70 worth but worth a play after a price drop or sale or if it comes to gamepass.
