3.5/5 ★ – ReverieVagabond's review of Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift.
If you enjoyed the gameplay of FFTA and are trying to decide to play this game based off that: go for it. It genuinely is an improvement in every way (although battles still feel sluggish, even with the removal of the judge's turn). Grinding for abilities and jobs for my units got so addicting that I would spend full afternoons doing so.
Just don't go expecting the greatest story. It drops the ball on that a lot, and you can feel it right off the bat. Whereas in FFTA, Marche had to locate his friends and convince them to leave, Luso is just nonchalant and doesn't really think about returning home seriously until he dreams about it. Even then, it doesn't feel like he's really changed as a character.
They also did this thing where they made some FFXII characters part of the main story, and while that's fine, it just contributed to this feeling that the game forgot to have an actual plot. They introduced a Moogle party member halfway through and he, frustratingly, had less relevance than them.
The music and art were still amazing though. Even if a lot of the tracks were just FFTA's but remastered, they were all still pleasant to listen to, and the sprites were as adorable as ever.
Even with my frustrations, I enjoyed my time with this game. I just wish that the story was better. And that they made a FFTA3. That won't happen, but I can dream
