Rig2Big's review of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

I have a problem… it’s wanting to have a comprehensive understanding of video game history, and to such lengths that I’m sometimes willing to ENDURE a video game, rather than enjoy it. Earning the right to call Morrowind some cutting-edge masterpiece, and for it to be featured on any one of my lists of “all-time” games sounds awfully tempting. I mean that very seriously, because I KNOW Morrowind is one of the greatest RPGs ever—might even be number one—but for the love of god, I will never be captivated by these sorts of universes in the same way other people are. Even for something that I love, like Lord of the Rings, the seemingly infinite scope of little interconnected lore-pieces within its utterly massive universe is NOT what keeps me in tune. It’s the character dynamics, the creatures, the aesthetic, etc. Those aspects also were my favorite parts of this game, but I digress. I played Morrowind for 5-6 hours on my own before diverting to some humongous video essay online (which I don’t often do). For like 3-4 days over the past several months, I’ve sat through this YouTube video called, “The Entire Main Quest Storyline - Morrowind” by A Bard’s Ballad. Super well-made video by the way, and strangely under-appreciated (or maybe just unnoticed) by the masses. My disinterest in seeing Morrowind through to the end has nothing to do with the quality of this video. But something today made me consider to myself, “Why should I feel obligated to STUDY such a massive fucking game like this when I don’t really enjoy it?” To tell you the truth, that was enough for me to drop it. Life is short. As awesome as it would be if humans could live forever, and we all had the time to experience every last piece of entertainment that we would like to… unfortunately, that’s just not the case. Morrowind is the masterpiece that some alternate reality version of myself fell in love with.
