4/5 ★ – Rig2Big's review of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.
Bro this game fucking rocks… highly recommend buying this on sale or playing it through game pass.
It’s been a long time since I played the 2014 Wolfenstein, but I do not recall being half as impressed by the atmosphere and “steam-punky” German architecture as I was with Old Blood.
One thing that did stick out to me, even back then when I had little to compare it to, was the cinematic battle sequences. That first part where you’re storming Normandy, and the other troops are just getting EVISCERATED by giant war machines, and the survivors are gobbled up by German shepherd mechs… shit’ll make your great grandpa reach for a rifle in his grave.
Old Blood is a very compact experience, lasting 8-10 hours at the very most, which is not something I ever thought I would want from a Bethesda title until I had it. There is just zero fat on this entire game. Every level is equally captivating, the scripted fights are gnarly as hell, and the secret Wolfenstein 3D stages are such effective fan-service.
But damn if I hate to admit how lame that final (W3D) “nightmare” level was. Only one mini-boss in a room by himself, seriously? Let me fight fucking mecha-Hitler if you’re just gonna do one final standoff like that.
Jesus I need to get my hands on Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
