2/5 ★ – RoboRev's review of Bayonetta 3.
Alright I have beaten the game and now I can give it an honest review.
I stand by what I said in my pre-review, anyone who gives this game more than 3 stars MAXIMUM clearly has never played a game with decent writing, level design, and most importantly, controls.
I will start by saying that the music in this game is fine, nothing different from the other Bayonetta games, but nothing too exciting to write home about either. The visuals, again, are good for what the hardware will allow, but are very much at a low end PS3 level. I also enjoyed the final level and cutscenes of this game, they were fun and just the right amount of ridiculous for me to pay attention.
But that is about it as far as “compliments” go.
The controls are sluggish almost to the point of unresponsive. That coupled with some pretty god awful and infuriating level design, this game feels rushed (even though it took 5 years to release albeit with a pandemic thrown in there) with little care for what the end user might experience. I appreciate their attempt to differentiate this game by adding a new character to play as, but holy god damn does Viola play like absolute ass. It is next to impossible to activate Witch Time with her block and so slow in her combat that I audibly sighed and groaned whenever I had to play as her.
Not only does she play poorly, but her character is annoying and unlikable. Now I am someone who enjoys camp in my stories and gameplay, and I submit that Bayonetta has never been a series with deeply thought out stories, but everything about the writing in this game feels like a child had come up with. It is so incoherent that most of the time my eyes glazed over and my brain shut off until it was time to play again.
I will be leaving the Bayonetta series with a bad taste in my mouth as I think I am done. I will not be continuing “in the new generation”
The only reason this game has a 4 star rating is because people are just horny for “Mommy Bayo”
Which honestly, I get it.
