4/5 ★ – SAW1992's review of The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes.

I finally finished House of Ashes on PS4, part of the anthology series by Supermassive Games. I did play majority of it last year, but then stopped because The Quarry came out & didn’t pick House of Ashes up again until yesterday. Partly played it is because I got their next instalment called The Devil In Me, wanna now play that next & plus I knew I was near the finish with House of Ashes. Overall it’s an excellent game & definitely Supermassive Games best entry in the anthology series. It’s very short but the story, Characters & choices are all very interesting & well thought out & there’s quite a lot to do within short amount of time. After the 1st Ep it delves straight into the action, hard choices & consequences. Straight away it went badly for me. After that it was all just about ok, picked up a few injuries but nothing serious until the end, where 1 part caught me out, put controller down thinking it was end but nope 1 last twist in the tale. The story does get a little bit far fetched & stupid towards the end overall though still a good game & experience. The graphics are quite detailed, even though the environments do render a lot during & after a cut scene or when going to next Ep. The sound & creature design is quite terrifying too. As per it’s same formula with gameplay as all other Supermassive Games so I liked that. The Characters are all fairly likeable, some at beginning are arse holes but become better later on, others stay likeable from start to finish. In the end I managed to keep 3 of the soldiers alive, that’s my usual standard on a 1st play through (same happened in Until Dawn & The Quarry). The Mo Cap Cast were really good, High School Musical’s Ashley Tisdale being the biggest star playing Rachel the Character everyone wants to save. Unfortunately for me Rachel died & turned into crispy creature mulch. I’m not really too sure what I’d do differently in my next play through as I left it so long. House of Ashes is definitely miles better than Man Medan & slightly better than Little Hope. Now onto the Saw inspired Hotel Deathtrap that is The Devil In Me.
