5/5 ★ – SIMONISPLAYING's review of What Remains of Edith Finch.
Often, when the games press glorifies or lifts up something, I can suspect a bit of skepticism there and also advise. On the other hand, especially when it comes to elements that are at home in other media, then the question often arises to what extent the special features of not only a game but also of a work of art actually find an expression. In any case, it is not an insinuation to make you, but rather a reflex to verify something. But in this case, I can understand it to a certain point. The game we have in front of us is certainly a work of art, certainly something that video games haven't been able to do that well so far. Well, it's true that the actual playing is not the center of attention, but if you actually take the time for this game in a session, thoughts and elements come up that really captivate you. It's a game that cuts into dimensions that you know from higher literature, which you might have worked out there but which you experience here in a wonderful mixture of your own exploration and experience. The stories may not be moving in themselves, but they always tell small touching backgrounds and there are real characters behind them. The whole environment is designed in great detail even if the graphic quality is not the best. One could ask oneself if it is a game, it is at least a medium, something that uses the elements of a game and I think the name of a game or I also think the name of a game or a video game as a game alone shouldn't necessarily move us in spheres of media, which actually isn't really about what is consumed in the case medium but it's about the possibilities and the experience and those elements that let us explore the world on our own and maybe guide us a little bit but nevertheless and Stephen an environment they let the story immerse but don't disturb you so to speak even the one who experiences it is probably told and that's something I wish for more such titles in the future. I.e. not that other titles (as you can see in my playing behaviour) have no justification, but something like that should and must be possible in a medium, maybe you could make it a little more provocative, well, for me it is important that I am allowed something like that and even more, I think that our common medium of his art becomes an art form and maybe and also can contribute to change something for us humans or to experience a different angle of observation. And: you have to open op to love this story!
