2/5 ★ – SaintzGB's review of Just Cause.
Just cause is actually one of the very first games I played when I got an xbox 360. So how does it hold up now?
Well honestly, not amazingly. It's a buggy mess a lot of the time.
General gameplay is okay, but you can really see the step up between JC1 and 2 as a lot of the basics here don't always work properly. For instance, using the grapple gun I'd often try to hook and steal a moving helicopter, but the game would glitch out and fling me off it due to issues with the geometry of my character and the chopper. This kind of issue would pop up a lot, its not a one off at all, but this example is what happened most often.
Speaking of vehicles though, I think that any vehicle I use is basically made of either glass or paper. The number of times I'd hit one vehicle and my car would explode while the AI were perfectly fine, was insanely high. Seriously, so if I have a tank and the AI has a tank, they will fire faster, take less damage and kill me very quickly, but I can't kill them even slightly as fast and I have no clue why. Also they are either aimbot or complete idiots, no in between. AI as a whole in this are far too annoying, the police especially are really overzealous and it's impossible to escape these situations a lot of the time if you're in a car. Especially as they can fire guns in their car and you can't. You also can't fire guns in stunt position either.
The story is very forgettable too, it feels secondary to the other content. Basic premise is you're ruining a dictators regime. Like seriously that's the whole thing. The CGI looks a little dated too but its funny seeing dev gameplay thrown in at times on the computers. I do enjoy the little liberation side quests though, I think they are really good fun, just needed a little more variety as you only have like 3 variations (camp, settlement or hacienda).
However on the positive side, the areas actually are pretty great, it feels like the areas have a lot of depth and detail for its age, and I actually wanted to wonder around to see more. Although I will say, I think the map was a bit too big for its own good.
The guns feel great and actually I like the auto aim system, it feels like you have the option of just let that do the work or use the aiming system and both are solid choices. I like the variety too, not too many but also isn't sparse. I like giving us one weapon which are kind of Rico's signature guns, aka the dual revolvers, with infinite ammo, then the rest of the weapons are often better but finite and are lost upon death. The revolvers definitely are no slouch either though.
Overall I just think it's a fine game. I like 2 a ton more though.
