4.5/5 ★ – Sharff's review of Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
2 endings done (blue lions and golden deer)
The way the social sim aspects are mixed with the combat and tactics systems creates this really fun and addicting cycle to return to. The progress of developing your students and seeing that development show itself in battle is the most rewarded I’ve felt in a video game in quite sometime. Theres also a ton to replay value in the form of several routes that give you a new experience. The missions are very similar most of the time, but you get new character stories, new playable characters with unique stats, and a unique narrative with a unique final boss. Theres so much variety that you won’t have really experienced this game with only one play through. Its 50 hours a single playthrough which sounds kinda long but goes by kinda quick with how invested you can get.
The only criticisms I have is that exploring the church grounds in between battles can break the pacing sometimes and it’s kinda necessary if you want to make some real progress on leveling up your characters. This can also slow down the first half of the game on replays. Its not that big of a deal but it could very easily be fixed by adding the option to use a menu to access all of that stuff, if players want to rush through the day instead. Lastly, some routes are left with some visible plot holes. Certain events will happen just for the sake of the plot or for the sake of presenting certain information, and they don’t always match up with the story thats attempting to be told. Its again, not a big deal, but when playing a few of the routes, you can see that some routes clearly had more time for development than others.
Overall though, playing every route leads to something satisfying. You will never feel empty while playing and if you’re left wanting more afterwards, it may mean that you’re craving a replay. Please check it out, one of the best RPGs on the switch!
