4.5/5 ★ – Shidan's review of Silent Hill 3.
I've now beaten it for the second time and have some thoughts...
First, I want to say that I love this game and it has had a huge influence in me. Second, this isn't a proper review, I will definitely replay this game and then I intend to write a review.
So, this was my third Silent Hill game and as the first time playing it, I played it just after finishing Silent Hill 1. My favorite Silent Hill game and favorite game ever (tied with Shadow of the Colossus) is Silent Hill 2, and replaying 3 hasn't change that (and most likely will never change).
I want to start by saying that Heather is the best character in all the Silent Hill games, and maybe in all the games I've played, she is completely believable and relatable (I even tried to make her as a Bloodborne character).
This time, the part that had the biggest impact on my by far (due to personal reasons) was the scene when she gets home... and I just want to say that it is well done (I'm not saying more about it to avoid spoilers).
There's only one thing I didn't like, and other thing I didn't enjoy as much as the first time I played.
First what I didn't like, the progression of the game and the story aren't as well executed as in both Silent Hill 1 and 2, here the first part is a bit too long in my opinion, I'd probably remove the sewers from the game. When she gets home is when the game really starts, but from that point until the end the game felt short and the conection between places felt more like different maps put together rather than a believable world and that is probably it's weakest point, since in both Silent Hill 1 and 2 are more coherent and believable with the progression form one area to the next one.
Second, I think this game benefits from a blind playthrough/ first playthrough, since some aspects that where unexpected, shocking and/or scary, lost impact this time, and that, I didn't expect. I thought I was going to enjoy the game a lot more than I already did, and since the first and previous time I played it was in 2019, I really thought I was going to be surprised again, but I guess the game was so impactful to me that I remembered most of the important parts. To explain why I didn't expect to remember the game so much, it's mainly because of Silent Hill 1, I've now finished Silent Hill 1 for the third time, and each time I replayed that game I liked it even more and discovered new things I didn't see the previous time playing it. I'm NOT saying I didn't get anything new from playing this time again, but it was less than I thought.
Also, I've never stopped listening to the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack, so I alredy knew what was comig, but that was completely expected.
This game is great and I completely recomend it, I want to play it again and want to enjoy it even more, is true that this game didn't quite match the expectations I had while replaying it, but keep in mind that the game already overcame the expectations I had when I first played it, so I still appreciate it and without a doubt I consider it one of my favorites.
To be honest, I won't try to make the most comprehensive and well writen review out of this, these are just my thoughts after replaying the game and I don't consider this a review that does the game justice.
