5/5 ★ – Shirts_that_fit's review of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
I contemplated giving this game a perfect score and ultimately decided I had to. Let me explain why. I think it’s important to disclaim that games set out to accomplish different things. Assassins creed sets out to make this huge beautiful world with a great story, quests, etc… and it is rated as such. Whereas games like Mario are very clearly not trying to blow you away with their story. Instead it’s their gameplay and mechanics that people rate them on. This is why the game “inside” gets a 10 and AC origins only gets an 8. Even though inside is a 4 hour game and AC origins took me 80 hours. It’s because inside perfected what they set out to do and AC origins did not. With that being said Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart perfected what it set out to do. Is the story lackluster?…maybe a little (although it really isn’t bad). Did it affect my experience negatively?… not in the slightest.
I’ll start with the graphics. This is one of the best looking games ever made. The backgrounds and detail in every area made my jaw drop. You could pause the game at anytime and take a screenshot and people would think it was a cutscene. There were multiple times where I didn’t realize I could control the character because I thought the cutscene was still rolling.
Next, the guns/fighting gameplay. There was not one gun that I felt was weak or boring. Once I maxed out a guns level i would immediately start using the next. This led me to find all types of synergies with weapons that I would have never found before. Did I want to freeze my enemies and blow them to smithereens with rockets? Or become a master of fifteen tiny robots and 4 funguys and watch them tear my enemies apart.
The rift mechanic blew my mind every time I used it. Between that and the way the game would instantly teleport you between dimensions without loading screens made it feel truly next Gen. More than any other game I’ve played.
The cinematic gameplay was incredible. The way massive enemies would be attacking while you’re on grind rail and being launched across the map. I cannot explain how much I love that type of gameplay.
This was one of the first times in a game where I thought I was fighting the final boss and I was so upset because I didn’t want the game to end. Thank goodness I was only a little over halfway through. So many games overstay their welcome but The length of this was honestly perfect. I would choose a 15 hour game like this over a bland 80 hour game any day.
This game was an absolute treat to platinum. And I am far from a completionist. The quality of games that insomniac has put out over and over again has not only cemented them as a S tier game developer, but one of, if not my favorite developer. I will play every single game they put their hands on. No questions asked.
