3.5/5 ★ – Shojikoto's review of Tails Noir.
On the surface, this game sounds like it was tailor made for me. Published by Raw Fury (which, I normally tend to enjoy their games quite a bit), being a "point and click" puzzle adventure game, set as a noir stealth adventure/narrative where you play as a PI raccoon, taking place in a retrofuturistic dystopian world with beautiful pixel art and striking music. However, it did not pull me in and keep me hooked as strongly as I initially thought it would, and left me with mixed feelings and disappointment at the end... It has the solid makings of a "point and click" puzzle adventure game, reminiscent of the old LucasArts games that I tend to love. Narratively, I feel the prologue was excellent and had a very solid setup with intriguing characters and an interesting world in the following first couple acts. Although, this was all undone in the third act and following second half of the game. Being hit with a plot twist and then it proceeds to disregard your previous choices, and has a real lack of resolution to any of its plot threads that you built up in the prologue and first couple acts. Because of this, I found myself struggling at times to stay engaged in the second half of the game, and the ending left a sour taste in my mouth and had me feeling like the story wasn't complete... That said, the aesthetic, the magnificent pixel art, the music, and sound design of the game definitely carried this game for me.
The foundation is definitely all there - the world, the aesthetic, the art/design, the music, and even the narrative to some extent (in the beginning). If Eggnut can build upon the strengths of this game, but further strengthen the narrative in a sequel, which is supposedly coming later this year, I think that has the potential to be a strong game. So with that in mind, I’m interested in what comes next from EggNut and will definitely keep my eye out for their next installment.
