5/5 ★ – Shrimpydoodle's review of BloodbornePSX.
The Bloodborne PSX demake feels like a love letter to both the PS1 and Bloodborne, and it absolutely nails what makes both things special (including the frustrations that come with each).
The PS1 aesthetic is fantastic, with jaggies and jiggles and texture warping throughout. The menus and intentionally janky controls also feel convincingly PS1. Even the music and spoken dialogue have been crunched down to fit the PS1 style. Everything combines together nicely into a nostalgic but fresh experience.
The demake is also still undeniably Bloodborne despite the aesthetic changes; it FEELS like PS4 Bloodborne to play at its core. Enemies have practically the same movesets as their more modern counterparts, and the flow and the difficulty of the combat feel on par with the original game. However, thanks to some clever variations in level design and new areas that are very on-brand for a Fromsoft-inspired game, certain moments made me feel like I was playing Bloodborne for the first time again. Feeling that sense of foreboding from not knowing what is lurking around the next corner again was a wonderful surprise.
I would enthusiastically recommend this to any Bloodborne fan, or to anyone who hasn't played the original and would like a taste of what makes it so incredible. 5/5
