5/5 ★ – SilverScroll's review of CHRONO TRIGGER.
Chrono Trigger is a game that is absolutely legendary, hailed as one of the best JRPGs of all time along with the likes of Final Fantasy VII, Persona 5 and Dragon Quest XI, but does it deserve a place among this pantheon of masterpieces?
This is quite possibly the easiest question anyone has ever had to answer in the history of man because yes, it is arguably the single greatest JRPG ever made. As soon as you enter your first combat encounter the sheer quality of the core gameplay shines through it's seemingly simple visage, a sign of things to come as every single aspect of this game is pitch perfect.
Special mention to the game's incredible music scored by Yasunori Mitsuda, every single song here fits perfectly for the scene it's in, and he creates what is undoubtedly one of the best soundtracks of all time, kickstarting a truly impressive career. I also have to mention the characters because the entire main cast is so great and well developed. Robo and Marle are my personal favorites, Robo being the lovable robot and Marle being the rebellious Princess.
The team that developed Chrono Trigger are often referred to as the 'dream team' due to the number of Big names involved with the project and yeah, the sheer number of people who's work you've either seen or heard of before involved in the game's development is unimaginable in this day and age, the core three are Hironobu Sakaguchi, (creator of Final Fantasy) Yuji Hori, (creator of Dragon Quest) and the late, great Akira Toriyama. (who most people know for being the creator of Dragon Ball, as well as the character designer for the Dragon Quest games) other names who you might or might not recognise include Yoshinori Kitase, (director of Final Fantasies VI, VII, VIII and X as well as Producer of X, VII Remake and Rebirth) Masato Kato (script writer of Final Fantasy VII and Xenogears) and Tetsuya Takahashi (Graphic director of Final Fantasy VI and executive director of the Xeno franchise). The reason I've listed a seemingly endless number of names here is to try and show how incredible this development team was, and how one of a kind it truly is, so many people either kickstarted their career or added another feather to their cap off the back of this game.
I could talk for hours about any aspect of this game but in all honesty it's better to experience Chrono Trigger for yourself, no matter your experience with JRPGs or even videogames, it's perfect for anyone. This is inarguably one of the best games of all time.
