4/5 ★ – SilverScroll's review of Mafia: The Old Country.

You've played this before, and can probably guess every plot point before it happens, but mafia the old country is absolutely brilliant, heartbreaking and captivating in equal measure. Go in with the right expectations set and you will really enjoy this. Mafia has never been a series at the forefront of innovation and this is no exception. The developers clearly had the first game as a blueprint and it makes for what is arguably the best game in the series, with references to previous games in the series ( for example an arrest document for Ennio Salieri, the appearance of Giuseppe from mafia II) aplenty. The gameplay isn't the best by any means (for the love of GOD turn off aim assist) but it's got it where it counts, and the story is truly brilliant, with a brutal ending that, while you can see coming a million miles away, still got me and hit me in the feels. Sicily makes for an excellent, unique setting like nothing in the series before. The graphics are best shown in the sweeping landscapes and hills of the island and this is a truly picturesque game. I'll admit I wasn't a fan when the game was announced but this world is truly beautiful. Enzo is a brilliant protagonist and while his personal journey might not be pronounced, it makes for excellent viewing. The main cast are great, and join the surprisingly excellent casts from the other games. While the supporting cast are pretty unmemorable, Luca, Leo and Cesare are a joy to see, partly down to the games generally brilliant acting performances and well written nature. Ratings are weird, because this might not necessarily be a better game than stuff I've rated as 7 on here, you need to rate games as to what they are. The Mafia series has never been a system seller, but for what it is, it's the best in house. I applaud Hangar 13 for their brilliant work.
