2/5 ★ – SilverScroll's review of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
I can only recommend this game to you if your a star wars fan, its combat is as deep as a puddle, but succeeds in making the player feel like a jedi, its different worlds left me feeling disappointed and are a massive downgrade on fallen orders and the villains are paper thin. Ultimately, jedi survivor did nothing to reignite my love for star wars after the utter sludge released on Disney plus recently and only served to deepen my dislike of the star wars franchise.
The main cast of characters is about the only thing I liked about this game, Cal and Merrin in particular are great together and the main reason I enjoyed the story, greez is also good but the game introduces too many pointless characters, for example zee who's role in the story could entirely be told through flashbacks and feels little more than a vendor with some backstory. Cal is an excellent protagonist who grapples with the dark side throught the story, creating a deeper character and one who is more interesting.
Jedi: survivors combat only works if your a star wars fan, because it's not deep enough to entertain you otherwise, it succeeds in making the player feel like a jedi but the limit to only two stances feels like a really stupid decision as it limits combat and restricts what you put your skill points into, there are only about two or three moves you can gain for each stance but as these use force it means for the majority of your playthrough you'll be mashing square. This combat has the potential to be really good but the potential is never realised here. The beast combat in particular feels particularly weak and a few of the enemy types are annoying to fight against. Outside of the beasts the enemy design is pretty good and the different enemies are all placed with each other to create a good variety of things to kill. Credit where its due getting a flawless run of kills on a group of droids in this game feels so satisfying to pull of and truly makes you feel like a badass jedi.
The worlds of jedi: survivor are this games biggest disappointment, it has six worlds to explore but only two of these are properly explorable as tanalorr, nova garon, the shattered moon and corusanct serve as story content and offer little in the way of exploration, the two worlds left, koboh particularly, feel too open with alot of empty space. Pair this with a map that is near unusable, prioritising style over usability and koboh feels tedious to explore, the great thing about fallen orders worlds were that they were pretty linear, but they had enough space to put collectibles in places and still felt open without making the player confused, jedi survivors worlds are too big, and when in missions it's not clear at points where to go next.
The story is pretty forgettable, with essentially the same macguffin story structure being told here, but where in fallen order the holocron was very much in the background, the search for tanalorr is front and center, meaning it focuses on very little else, the weakest point of the story being the villains, who had such enormous potential yet fail to realise it, the high Republic jedi in particular could have been such an interesting villain but the game never gives him enough development and just turns him into a generic bad guy. The twist I saw coming from a mile away and the final boss feels like a jedi for the sake of being a final boss rather than having a good lore reason.
Ultimately, the only thing I enjoyed about jedi survivor is the strength of its protagonist, Cal and the bond he shares with merrin, there is little to entertain someone like me who has fallen out of love with star wars so I can only recommend this game if you are a fan of the series or played and enjoyed fallen order. I can safely say that after this trilogies third entry I am done with star wars, and I hope to never touch it again.
