3/5 ★ – SilverScroll's review of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
I think what elder scrolls you like the best depends on which one you played as a kid, cause I was a little disappointed by Oblivion I'm not gonna lie, and I think that Skyrim is objectively better. I've not played any of the guild questlines yet, but even if they're outstanding, most of the other stuff is just either dated or sucks ass.
For example the dungeons, I respect that they're made by one guy but their soul draningly bad, they have no sense of cohesion or progress, they're all identically copied and pasted and most of the ones I explored lacked any sort of reward at the end. Ultimately, part of what I personally love about the elder scrolls is exploring in the middle of nowhere and seeing where you end up and what locations you find, and when your exploration leads you to what are basically empty rooms with a few goblins you lose that longing for it.
Another thing I dislike was the quest design, because about 60% of the main story is 'go here and get this thing/person' and when it's not that it's to close an oblivion gate, which are even more dungeons that are just tedious and boring to trek through.
I will say that the main story is brilliant and by far better than skyrim, you are not the main hero of this tale, rather, martin is. The last bastard son of the Emperor who you help and bond with over the course of the story, the ending is so good and especially if you're a lore nerd and seeing mehrunes dagon, daedric prince of destruction and an avatar of akatosh, the dragon god of time fight in the middle of the imperial city is so fucking cool. Also the music is fantastic and truly welcoming and nostalgic even if you haven't played the game before.
As for the remastered side of the game, they smashed the visuals out of the park, it obviously looks ten times better now and the animation improvements are brilliant, but since this is unreal engine five it happens to run like complete dogshit so good luck playing it at a stable framerate.
Will probably update this later when I've done a bit more of the guild stuff and the dlc's to see if I've changed my opinion but aside from a brilliant story I've been sadly disappointed by my time in cyrodill.
